Christmas and new music :)

This morning I opened a pile of presents and three of those presents really made my Christmas amazing. I received Product (RED)  Solo Beats by Dre headphones, Angels and Airwaves Love Pt.1 and Pt.2 Deluxe Edition with DVD, and the newest Blue October album Any Man in America. Right now I'm listening to Blue October. For those of you who aren't familiar with the band I'll give you a quick intro to them. I am a huge fan of the band and always have been. Blue October's lead singer Justin Furstenfeld is as bipolar as you can get. He uses this in his music and for that I love him. Their music ranges from happy violin and vocal pairings to angry yelling and depressing lyrics. Their hit song was Hate Me which is a song Justin wrote for his mother, giving him the chance to apologize to her for all the crap he put her through. Sad yes but it's a pretty happy song towards the end. Their next big song, Dirt Room, took a different approach with angry vocals. Lyrics such as, "Oh god then you awoke you started screaming through the duct tape don't ever think I'm letting you go. I'm busy digging you a hole, now you'll be living in a dirt room breathing through the straw of your own." He's not a homicidal maniac, it's all figurative I swear.  The latest album kind of showed up off the radar.

I hadn't heard of a new album release but saw the album at Target and begged for it for Christmas. Any Man In America is dedicated to Justin's daughter Blue, her artwork is on the cover of the album and photos of her and her father are used inside the album case. After a very recent and very traumatic divorce, Justin no longer has custody of Blue and the entire album is fueled by the divorce. In his dedication he tells Blue that he tried to fix things and that he's sorry things aren't working out and that he apologizes for the language he uses on the album but that he loves her more than anything. Blue's voice is heard on the album for a moment and the rest of the album is a combination of frustrated and angry emotions thrown at his now ex wife and what they went through and apologies and warmhearted emotions for his daughter. The album is titled after all the men in America who go through divorce's and lose their children, which happen 90% of the time. I expected some kind of sad song feel to the album but it's far more than that. It's an incredible album and I highly recommend it to anyone who likes Blue October or Kings of Leon, Carolina Liar.

The Chills- Blue October

Favorite songs off of Any Man in America:
For the Love
The Chills
The Flight (LNK to MSP)
Any Man In America

I'll be sure to write a review of Angels and Airwaves once I get through both albums. And anyone looking into headphones, I highly recommend Beats By Dre. Best headphones I've EVER had. You can hear literally everything in the song :)

Music as therapy...

Music has many uses. It entertains us, occupies spare time between classes, gives us motivation to exercise, and for me it's a form of therapy. I am bipolar, I have a history of self injury and suicidal thoughts, I've been hospitalized many times, and I know what it's like to feel like there's no way out. Luckily I have music, we all go through tough times and music can always help whether a song helps you smile or even make you realize how lucky you are to be alive. So whether you're bummed out, heart broken, depressed, suicidal, or just need something to make sense in your life here are some of my favorites... (may or may not be triggering, please use your own discretion)

Flyleaf- Much Like Falling

Saosin- You Are Not Alone

Skillet- Last Night

Sick Puppies- Odd One

Evanescence- Tourniquet

Flyleaf- Red Sam

And this girl made an incredible video. I'm not religious but I found this video inspiring. Hopefully you weren't triggered by anything above but this is a great way to end the post. The video shows you that you have a reason to live, you were put here for a reason. Check it out, support Cassie!

hey so I found this incredible band you should all look into you will not be disappointed I promise. The band is Laconic, they're out of Arizona. Their sound is unique however you'll definitely like them if you like Killswitch Engage and Five Finger Death Punch. I'm officially a fan, my favorite songs are Medicated and On This Cold Night. They seem like cool guys with a lot of talent so give them a listen! You can preview their songs on their facebook page, they are also on twitter and youtube. I will give you all of the links :)

Something easy on the ears for a change :)

I've been giving you all some of my favorite screamo rock genre pieces but there's much more to alternative rock and metal than that. So here's some of my favorite indie/alternative/rock tunes I love dearly...

Foster the People

I hated Foster the People the first time I listened to their song Pumped Up Kicks. It was played every other song on every pop rock station for many months and I hated it. But like most bad things it grew on me and now I love it. You'll like Foster the People if you like quirky funny songs that get stuck in your head...

Foster the People- Pumped Up Kicks

Jack's Mannequin

I love this band I have for a long time. They sing about love, heartache, the same stuff everyone else in the industry sings about but they're different. The piano falls into the vocals, the drums are defined but don't take over, and the vocals are beautiful. You're gonna like them if you like softer alternative rock...

Jacks Mannequin- Dark Blue

Gaslight Anthem

Gaslight Anthem is a group of very talented guys who can make your heart throb while making you jump and throw your hands in the air. I love them, I listen to them all the time but of course I have a favorite song so here it is...

Gaslight Anthem- Bring it On

Enjoy :)

Happy (belated) Halloween!!!!

So sorry it's been a while since I've posted, just a busy life I guess. About a week before Halloween I start listening to a themed playlist on my ipod to get me in the spirit. Bands like Evanescence, Korn, The Used, soundtrack to Queen of the Damned, Slipknot, and many more. Here are a few of my creepy eerie favorite Halloween themed songs...

Evanescence- Haunted

 Korn- Coming Undone

The Used- Wake the Dead

Wayne Static- Not Meant for Me

Disturbed- Forsaken

Happy Halloween!!!

World Record

Thirty Seconds to Mars has won the title for Guiness Book of World Records for the largest amount of shows performed within a single album cycle meaning This Is War. 300 SHOWS!!!!! Congrats guys you deserve it!

I AM PROUD TO BE AN ECHELON

-Emily

Shannon Leto...the best?

Shannon Leto is my rocker god. He's an amazing drummer who literally came from nothing. Him and his younger brother Jared formed 30 Seconds to Mars as a way to further their creativity in a way that changed music entirely. Though he's not in the spotlight, Shannon is definitely a well known presence at the bands shows. Known for tattoos, wise quotes, sweat, being wild yet quiet, and sticking out his tongue. I love his work he kicks ass. Enjoy these complimentary pics of the Shannimal!!!

ENJOY!

PARAMORE!!!

There really is no need for full capitalization in the blog post title but live with it. It just makes it that much more exciting to see what fun stuff I put in this post. I've been on a bit of a Paramore kick. When I get ready in the morning, Paramore. When I take a shower, Paramore. When I go for a walk around the loop, Paramore. When I go to class, Paramore. My ipod has some scattered songs such as, All We Know Is Falling, Decode, Monster, Ignorace (Acoustic), Misery Business, Crush Crush Crush, even a cover of You Ain't Woman Enough To Take My Man. As far as albums go I have The Final Riot! and Brand New Eyes. To be honest I used to hate Paramore. I thought Hayley Williams was a pretentious bitch, which I now know she's just got a little touch of the "I'm in charge, not you" flu, typical but not enough for me to dislike her. In my opinion Paramore sounds like a more popular pop rock version of Flyleaf, or Flyleaf is a less pop rock version of Paramore. However you want to look at it is fine. Paramore's songs are perfect for the average teen breakups and quite suitable for a vampire flick. I'm sure you've all heard of Paramore, probably even been to a show or too but if you haven't yet heard or seen the video for Monster you really should because it's a great song and the video is pretty cool and a little different. And yes you'll notice the band now has 3 members (google the drama if you missed out, its not worth talking about on here) but they still sound incredible :)
*Monster
*Where the Lines Overlap
*Emergency (live version is the best)

AVA

Angels and Airwaves drummer Atom Willard has officially left the band and we wish him all the luck in life. Atom you're a great drummer and you will be missed. The band is a great combo of pieces of other bands, Blink 182, 30 Seconds to Mars, a no name punk band, and Boxcar Racer. They're music is tough to describe other than epic. They use a lot of synth and pop/punk rock and when it combines its like an explosion. Something you should really look into because it's great. Their newest album is Love Part Two set to be released 11.11.11 on the bands website. Definitely listen to them, old stuff new stuff, its all GOOD!

I push my fingers into my eyes....

I have loved Slipknot since junior-high school. listening to them made me feel like the most hardcore goth kid known to man. Little did I know I was one in a million. Everyone from goth kids to punk rockers to indie/ska college kids knows who Slipknot is. How can you knot (get the pun?) know the masks of Slipknot. Drums like incredible thunder, guitars like no other, and vocals that in reality can never be matched. Of course you can see a lighter side of Corey Taylor in Stonesour, another amazing band by the way. Slipknot has changed over the years from Wait and Bleed to Spit it out to Duality to Vermilion to Psychosocial and Sulfur. All of these songs show the progression Slipknot has made, every song and album better that the last of course they're all great. If you listen to more of their recent music off of the album All Hope Is Gone their sound is more together yet still crazy as Slipknot can ever be. If you like Mushroomhead or Stonesour you will no doubt like Slipknot. Here's my most favorite video, Psychosocial by Slipknot.
Rest in Peace Paul Gray (bassist)

PS... Joey Jordison is the greatest metal drummer, he has played full kit upside down. definitely look into it, its awesome.

Enjoy :)

This is Suicide Silence with You Only Live Once. I'll be sure to post a longer blog on this band soon but for now here's a little 2:20 pick me up :)

In This Moment...

It's funny how things can happen sometimes. I live in northeastern NY, way past Albany (I believe I've said this before) but my mom worked in Schenectady for a long time. Some of you may know this but Maria Brink, lead singer of In this Moment is in fact from Schenectady NY (About an hour from my home, just cool how things happen like that). Personally I love the band, when they first got big I dreamed of being Maria Brink she was my idol and still is. She has a son, she's in a metal band, touring, playing shows non stop, recording song after song...she's super mom. It's just strange to take a step back and see that you can be a nobody and still make it to be a somebody. If you have never heard Maria Brink sing you're missing out. She has this gorgeous voice but she can growl and I mean really growl and scream like no other. Compared to Flyleaf, her vocals are more matured but same concept, not to mention Brink is gorgeous. I've seen In this Moment live, up close and personal. At the concert I went to they filmed Beautiful Tragedy live and my friends were in the video in the crowd. I had literally just left the pit so I was not in the video. But I'm okay with that. Maria has a ton of energy, the whole band does. There is no way that someone could go to one of their shows and not jump, clap, scream, mosh, crowd surf. It's just not possible to avoid all those things at their shows. As far as their relationship with fans, they love us. They say time and time again that they would not be here today without their fans. They always return the love.

The band is heavy, I only compare the vocal technique to Flyleaf not the overall sound of the band. If you like The Agonist or Otep just imagine them with a more feminine twist to it and that will give you In this Moment.

Albums:
Beautiful Tragedy 2007
The Dream 2008
A Star-Crossed Wasteland 2010

Some of my favorites songs:

Album Beautiful Tragedy
-Beautiful Tragedy
-Daddys Falling Angel
-Legacy of Odio

Album The Dream
-Forever
-Call Me

Album A Star-Crossed Wasteland
- The Promise
- Gun Show

Here are the bands webpages give them a listen! I'll even give you two videos because I cannot just pick one :)

Bipolar Rock

Taking a turn away from metal for a moment I want to share with you a rock band I love. Blue October is a rock band (not a metal band at all) out of Texas, their music is about of course the typical love, breakup, etc... but it is also based on the lead singers extensive battle with bipolar disorder and drug addiction. The song Hate Me was written for his  mother as an apology for everything he put her through baically telling her "it's okay to hate me" but really she cares about him more than anything. This is one of their biggest hits so give it a listen. Everyone can relate to their songs because they are about depression, love, and life, basically everything you can think of is in their music. Some of my favorite songs by Blue October are Hate Me, Life's Like A Jumprope, Balance Beam, and Dirt Room. I recommend all of Blue Octobers music to you if you like 30 Seconds to Mars, 3 Days Grace, and Cavo.

A classic in my eyes...

The Used have been and will always be a rock classic to me. What's not to like? The guy takes extreme heartache and loss and puts it into these epic songs. Mosh, cry, sing, yell, scream, break things. So many emotions build up in their songs its incredible. There's a song for every feeling though many of the songs are on the darker side.
The Used
Some of my favorite songs:
Liar Liar
Hospital
Kissing You Goodbye
Men Are All The Same
I Caught Fire
Blood On My Hands

Video: Empty With You

Really I could never choose one song as a favorite but, Empty With You (also available as an acoustic version..great by the way) is an extremely powerful song to me. Bert McCracken (lead singer) lost his girlfriend to a drug overdose when she was pregnant with their child (the baby also died). Bert put this loss into his music so while the music video is a "tour" video the song is actually about his girlfriend. His way of saying, if you feel empty, if you want to take your life I could do it too if that meant I could be with you. It's a terribly sad song but it will always be a favorite of mine and to many others out there. If you are a fan or if you become a fan of the Used you will realize how they are a classic to me. They just fall into that category all on their own and it's fucking awesome

Flashback to Flyleaf

flashback anyone???

Lacey of Flyleaf
(fact: she does not like shoes)

So Flyleaf has been on a bit of a break aka Lacey is having a baby. But this does not mean we stop listening to them! FLASHBACK! Remember when Flyleaf first started? They were so raw and loud but now they've really polished off their sound and it's great, they've really come into their own on this one. Even though they are a Christian band that does not mean only those with religious beliefs relate to the songs. Everyone can get something out of their music which is a great quality for a band like this to have. I really do like this song and this video. Off the album Memento Mori this is Sorrow. Lacey has a unique voice that no one can really match. She growls and screams and yet her voice is so innocent and empowering at the same time. It's an amazing gift she has and the video is very well made, I love it and I hope you do to. Here it is, Sorrow...

enjoy :)

Pierce the Veil :)

Pierce the Veil: I'm really liking this band. Haven't ever heard much of them before today. Check them out, this is an older song of theirs from 2009 but they do have more and newer music out there. The video I'm showing you is called Chemical Kids and Mechanical Brides. Great song, weird video, here's their Facebook, go show them some support!

So I'll be posting a few more posts like this, just some new favorites so check out each one!

ipod scare and 5FDP

Last night I went about my normal nightly routine. Brush teeth, wash face, fill up water bottle, set my phone alarm, set my ipod alarm and then boom go to bed. Well after I completed my nightly tasks I then fell asleep only to be woken up by some internal alarm clock at 2:30 am. When checking my ipod to see the time I accidentally pressed the music button which displayed no music. When I say no music I mean my ipod was empty. I started freaking out while trying not to wake my roommate. I ran to the computer plugged in my ipod and after giving it a minute the ipod refreshed the library and the music returned. I was so scared because 90% of my music is either from someone else's laptop or it came from my old laptop which no longer has itunes. A whole lot of worry over nothing thank god.

Well besides my hectic night what else is new? The past couple days I've been really into Five Finger Death Punch. On my ipod I only have their first album but I know quite a few of their other songs. If you haven't ever listened to 5FDP you should check them out asap. They are similar to heavy metal so if you like bands like Slipknot, Bullet for My Valentine, and Korn you will like Five Finger Death Punch without a doubt. They mix incredible speed drumming with deep vocals and beautiful yet raw guitar. Some favorite of mine are: The Bleeding, Salvation, and a cover of Bad Company. Lots of noise, lots of crunch, lots of mayhem...Check em' out guys and gals!!!

A school with little rock...

So my roommates have informed me that they are not fans of my music. To them it is loud and angry. They listen to Ben Folds Five and Foster the People. Now those aren't bad bands but they aren't on my ipod therefor I will probably never willingly listen to more then one or two songs by them. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion with music. I get that and it's fine but college kids all listen to the same shit. I'm talking about indie, 90's, soft no name rock, ska, rap, and some random shit I can't even begin to describe. I have seen probably 5 people who obviously listen to rock and metal. They have band tees, they don't dress like everyone else, they don't care about looking hot or pretty. But overall Purchase is a school with little rock, it's sad but it's true. So true :( But I'm okay with rocking it out to my ipod while strolling through campus. I feel proud. You should too! It's been a long day and I apologize for the huge gap in posts. I'll be sure to keep up this time :)

Fit for Rivals...a voice you'll remember

Fit for Rivals is a 5 piece rock band out of Jacksonville, FL. Your first listen will probably lead you to the assumption it's an all guy band. Take another listen, listen closely to the vocals and yes the lightbulb hovering over your head clicks on. The singer for Fit for Rivals is Renee Phoenix. Her voice is deep, raspy, and a cross between Joan Jett and the singer from Bring me the Horizon. No joke. But that's what I love about her. She is not a barbie doll. She has tattoos. She does not have enormous boobs (many of the comments on their yuotube videos seem to focus on her chest size. what that has to do with music I don't really know)  And she doesn't wear skanky clothes. Renee is a skinny jeans and tee shirt kind of girl and to top it off some old school beaten up chucks. The whole band (Jesse Carroll, John Hartman, Thomas Amoson, Ronnie, and Renee) is this group of laid back people who are in it for the music. They are a dysfunctional family like most bands and they're not afraid of people knowing that. I have yet to find a band that is similar to them but to give you an idea of what they sound like take Black Veil Brides and Escape the Fate. Also another band to check out is Renees other band from a few years ago is The Explicits. Kind of a side project/early on sort of deal. With any of their music I'm sure Renees voice is one you will always remember.

Check out their myspace at: http://www.myspace.com/fitforrivals
My top picks today are coming from Fit for Rivals:
Damage
Crash
Girl in a Coma

Check them out! You won't regret it :)

Drummer troubles and London metal....

To start off:

A little piece of music news...

Drummer Mike Pedicone has been removed from the My Chemical Romance lineup after being caught red handed stealing from the band. The band is handling this like adults and is ending their relationship with Pedicone, not filing charges etc... Basically they want as little hype as possible. So it's too bad people can turn like that but it's over for him, he ruined himself but the boys won't let it bring them down!

Moving on.....

A band I'm really into actually just found while on my daily internet search is Rise to Remain. They aren't a "new" band really but they're new to me and they just released a new album called City of Vultures. The band is a 5 piece group out of London they fall under the category of metalcore for some people just to give you a general idea though I don't always like labeling bands. They mix growls with what I like to call real singing even though anything with a tune is singing you get what I mean. I was looking through the Kerrang magazine website because they rarely sell the hard copy in the US at least nowhere near me. Rise to Remain is their featured band right now and you should definitely check them out. If you like Demon Hunter, Chiodos, Slipknot, and Bring me the Horizon. The band definitely makes a good connection between rock and metal and that's a quality I really look for in bands. So i will say my favorite songs are Power Through Fear and Serpent. The lyric video for Power Through Fear is right here. Please check out their youtube channel as well as their facebook and myspace. Give them a listen, show some support and music respect.

Playing favorites...

good charlotte...

I have developed a bad habit. I play favorites with music. Maybe it all started with my obsession with 30 Seconds to Mars. They were (and still are) my rock idols and because of that I've played every one of their songs to death and back again. However I also play favorites with songs. High on my list at the moment:

The River- Good Charlotte
Hold On- Good Charlotte
We Are Broken- Paramore
Chasm- Flyleaf
Monster- Paramore
and...
Good Life- Three Days Grace

Now, I believe it's perfectly normal to have long time favorites but for the sake of the music maybe we should limit ourselves. Play the song a certain amount of times and then stop so we don't accidentally bore ourselves with it. So check those songs out. You may know them already or they may be new to you. So either way give them a listen.

I'll be back later :)

Chiodos not Cheetos!

You know how sometimes a song will come across your ipod or the radio that you just suddenly can't get enough of? Well this happened one day when I was in the car with my friend John. We had his ipod plugged into the stereo and he was playing a mixture of songs I had never heard before. He at last put his ipod on shuffle and thats when I heard it. Smitten for the Mitten by a little band called Chiodos. I realized that years ago I had attended an annual rock concert, Edge Fest in Altamont, NY where Chiodos had originally been set to play. A last minute cancellation sent the flock of eyeliner covered teenagers to the parking lot to wait for their parents. Most of the crowd, including me at the time because I had never heard of the band, was happy to get rid of these newcomers. Me mostly because I was breaking one of the major rules of rock, I was going with the crowd. We never did see Chiodos play but I remember hearing the word "Cheetos" from practically everywhere in the audience and at the same time hearing, "No it's Chiodos!" But back to my story... Me and John were driving and listening to this new band, well new to me at least and I remember thinking I should have done this a long time ago. They've had two singers, both great screamers/growlers/singers. They each have something unique about them, I let you be the judge of that. They mix a gothic themed orchestra with a punk emo style rock. Their lyrics are raw and dark yet light and delicate. The songs telling stories of love and hate and everything that falls in between.
I highly recommend Chiodos to anyone who loves rock with screams and growls and songs about the cruel sides of love and the upsides of hate. My favorite tracks are Smitten for the Mitten, A Letter from Janelle, and Intensity in Ten Cities. And as for newer Chiodos...CAVES!!!!! check it out (heres the link)

September's Children

Rise Against, the band known for making a statement with every word out of their mouths has somewhat recently released the song, Make it Stop (September's Children). The song captivates the real life images we've all seen on the news of the children in high schools across the country who took their own lives after being bullied for being gay. The deaths of these kids affected the entire country and gave us a wake up call for something that is a major issue, bullying.
What better way to get a point across than through music. Rise Against has shown their support by releasing, Make It Stop with a music video to go along with it. If you haven't seen the video yet, definitely watch it asap. It shows how different students deal with being bullied for being gay/lesbian and how they turned to suicide but overcame it in the end. It's really a moving and kind of powerful (not trying to sound sappy).
The song itself I really like because it's a step away from "typical" Rise Against. If you listen carefully you can tell they've grown as a band and it makes me love them even more. They are the ones who can change people by screaming "this is what happens when people live with their eyes shut!" Rise Against once again shows us how to open ours eyes to see the bigger picture. Towards the end of the song the names of the teenagers who took their lives are announced with their ages. It gave me goosebumps the first time I heard it, that's when you know it's a good song.

Rise Against- Make it Stop (Septembers Children)..... 5 Stars (aka listen to it!)

Follow the link to the video :)

Long break, getting started....again

So it's been a while since I've had a post on here and I won't drown you with excuses. I had finals at my old school, I worked my butt off all summer, I just moved into my apartment on campus at SUNY Purchase so I'm set now.
I've noticed there is an amazing range of musical tastes here at Purchase College. Indie isn't exactly my thing but 90 percent of this campus feels the opposite and that's fine. Everyone has their own opinion, I'm sticking to rock and even being brave enough to branch out a bit with some new rock while also taking a look back at some long forgotten tunes I've been missing. Now enough rambling, I promise we'll get back to the music now. This time it's gonna be everyday whether I tell you the tales of "D Hall's" all you can eat junk food or my new favorite songs full of screams and growls. So to give it a fresh start, my music post is going to come after this one. It deserves its own post.
See ya! :)
ps- thats my bed/room, just sayin. not fully decorated yet :)

Screamo.....say what?

We've all seen them. The all too pale skinny teenagers wearing skin tight jeans and eye liner. The EMO kid is what they're called I guess. Now don't get me wrong, I have friends who fall under this category and I myself wear a pair of skinnies and some eye liner now and then but some kids take it too far. I used to hate so called "screamo" music. I thought it was pointless until I heard Chelsea Smile by Bring Me The Horizon (BMTH) and I was hooked. The lyrics make sense! One of those Eureka moments and it's still got a hold on me. I now have two albums on my ipod of BMTH. Their newest one, There Is A Hell Believe Me I've Seen It, There Is A Heaven Let's Keep It A Secret, and I also have an older album Suicide Silence with the remix album. BMTH is a British metal band, some say metal, some say rock, some say screamo....whatever. They scream and growl and give you goosebumps. Some awesome tracks to listen to: Crucify Me, Don't Go, Home Sweet Hole, Chelsea Smile, and It Was Written In Blood.

While BMTH is full of growling and screaming 90% of the time, another band has more of a 50/50 going on. Chiodos is an American band with really strange song titles and lyrics but they are simply incredible. Epic strings matched with intense vocals and growling add in some light piano and bam, you have Chiodos. My favorite song of theirs has to be Smitten for the Mitten. I listen to it on repeat. Seriously it kicks ass. I only have one of their albums but it's great and highly recommend them to any screamo fan or closet screamo fan, you know who you are...

Fav songs for the moment....
Smitten for the Mitten- Chiodos
Chelsea Smile- Bring Me The Horizon
Na Na Na Na- My Chemical Romance
The Silence- Mayday Parade
Get Up- Mayday Parade
Emergency- Paramore

Until next time...

Wow long time no see blogger :)

Okay so in all honesty I've been avoiding my bloog more like neglecting it. Since October, my last post, I've seen 30 Seconds to Mars perform for the second time, I got a lot of new music to listen to, I made it through first semester at college, and I got accepted at SUNY Purchase for transfer this fall. Finally a shot at some better music. So I want to start this blog over again. Fresh new look, gonna change a few things and make it more of a regular thing. Blogging is important for journalists right? Exactly......I'm baaaaaack :)
